‘American Idol’ is cruel, or so says Jake Bugg, who’d know a thing or two about it, having performed on the show recently. Not as a contestant though, so I think they actually treated him quite nicely.

Speaking about his appearance, Bugg told BBC Newsbeat: “It was quite sad. We ended up doing the show because one of the judges, Keith Urban, wanted us. [But] it’s cruel [for the contestants]. It’s like, ‘Thanks for coming on but you’ll never get a contract’. It’s the dream smasher”.

Given that the winner on the show automatically gets a record deal, and other finalists enter into a contract with the show’s makers and their label partners, that’s not quite right – there are plenty of contracts for ‘Idol’ contestants, it’s long-term success that’s never assured.

But anyway, why did he appear on the show if he feels this way? Well, he explained: “For my sins, as I talked about those shows so much, I thought it might be an idea to actually go and experience it. I thought we might as well. [Plus] we play music, it’s something a bit different for the kids [who watch] those shows. And some of those kids might only have one television in their house and their big sister might be in control of the remote”.

Yes, imagine not having the opportunity to hear Jake Bugg.
