Eddy Says: I’m walking on a dream

Empire Of The Sun

It happens once every few years for me. I find a new track, by a new band, and it takes over my life. I fall head over heels in love with it, as if it were a beautiful girl that ticks every box on that mental list we all harbour.

It becomes the last thing I think of before I go to sleep and the first thing on my mind when I wake up. All day long, the words and the melody sit on my frontal lobes and play on the tip of my tongue, my lips quietly mouth the words when I’m on the tube or bus and come out like I’m on ‘X Factor’ when I’m driving to a gig.

I think the last time it happened, just to put it into the context of time, was Tom Vek’s ‘Nothing But Green Lights’. This time it’s ‘Walking On A Dream’ by Empire Of The Sun, an Aussie duo comprising Luke from The Sleepy Jackson and Andy from Pnau (they did Remix Night once, when Darren Emmerson came to biggup his Underwater Records label).

For personal reasons, I’ve been pretty depressed the past few months, but it’s like this song has reached into the depths of my soul and filled the dark void with Persian kittens and Chow Chow puppies. Think MGMT with the added charm of Phoenix. I’ve got the same feeling I had when I first heard the Mylo album all those years ago. The feeling that nothing, and no one, will be able to stop this record crossing into people’s consciousness and making their lives that little bit better.

They don’t come around very often, those records that go beyond just good, beyond making you late for work, to making you quit your job. This is one of those special tunes that can mend a broken heart, and make you feel like you’re in love again, but without the inevitable pain and turmoil that the other kind of love brings with it. I’m cherishing this because it could be years before I feel that again.
