Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins appeared at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday for a routine plea and case management hearing. The date for the start of his trial for child abuse and other charges was set for 15 Jul, though the formal entering of his plea – expected to take place yesterday – was delayed until May. However, the singer’s lawyer issued a statement saying that Watkins “furiously denies all of the charges and allegations made”.

As previously reported, Watkins was charged with conspiring to rape a one year old girl; conspiring to engage in sexual touching with two young children; possessing, making and distributing indecent images; and possessing “extreme” animal pornography. Two women in their 20s, are accused of similar crimes and also appeared in court with Watkins yesterday – only one in person, Watkins and one of the women appearing via video link.

Watkins will remain in custody until at least his next hearing in May, though as he has previously been denied bail it is likely he will continue to be held in Parc Prison in Wales until the trial begins.

Following the court hearing yesterday, Watkins’ solicitor issued a statement to the press, saying: “”Mr Watkins furiously denies all of the charges and allegations made. He intends to fight to the bitter end to clear his name. He wishes to thank the fans, family and friends for the constant love and support they have given and continue to give throughout this testing time”.
