Playlist: Feeder

Formed in 1992 in Newport, Wales by vocalist and guitarist Grant Nicholas, drummer John Lee (who had already played in various bands with Nicholas) and bassist Taka Hirose, Feeder released their debut EP, ‘Swim’, through Echo Records in 1996.

Their first album, ‘Polythene’, followed a year later, receiving high critical acclaim and spawning a top 30 single with ‘High’. Though it was with their third album, ‘Echo Park’, that the band really broke into the mainstream, when the first single from the album, ‘Buck Rogers’, spent two weeks in the top ten.

In 2002, John Lee tragically committed suicide. Grant and Taka coped with the loss by pouring their feelings into a series of songs which went on to become fourth album ‘Comfort In Sound’. It gained them their highest acclaim to date and scored them another top ten chart position. In 2006, they released a single’s collection, which has since sold more than half a million copies in the UK alone, and then in 2008 came a fifth studio album, ‘Silent Cry’, which was the very last release on Echo before the record label was restructured as a ‘copyright exploitation company’ and ceased to put out records.

Branching out on their own, Feeder then set up their own label, Big Teeth Music, through which they will release new album ‘Renegades’ on 5 Jul, with the first single from it, ‘Call Out’, due to hit stores on Monday.

Ahead of that, we asked Grant Nicholas to put together a Powers Of Ten playlist for us. Grant says of his choices: “These are some of the songs that inspire me and make my days more complete”.

01 Pixies – Where Is My Mind?
I have loved Pixies for many years and have been lucky enough to see them live a few times. This is such a simple but powerful song. It’s an indie classic.

02 PJ Harvey – This Is Love

Taken from one of my favourite PJ Harvey albums. She has such a great voice and this track has some great guitar sound. I have always loved her more guitar driven stuff.

03 Neil Young – A Man Needs A Maid

It’s hard to pick from such an amazing back catalogue of songs. Neil Young is a legend and this is one of his most beautiful and heart felt moments.

04 Smashing Pumpkins – 1979

I have always liked the Smashing Pumpkins and this song introduced a slight electronic element after working with producer Flood. It’s such a catchy song, and still undeniably ‘them’.

05 The Police – Message In A Bottle

This song has such a cool guitar riff that I spent many hours trying to master it in my youth. The Police have been a big influence and this is one of their many great tunes.

06 Nirvana – Milk It

This song has such a power and energy to it. I love the drum sound and the vocal is so believable. I think, sonically speaking, this is one of the best Nirvana moments.

07 MGMT – Kids

This songs gets into your head and gets it’s hooks in. It’s a great song and I love the production. The rest of the album is pretty special, too.

08 Eels – Rags To Rags

I have been an Eels fan since the first album. This was a song that was always on repeat in my house. Class.

09 Nick Drake – Pink Moon

The man was an angel sent down to make beautiful melody and music. If you don’t like at least one Nick Drake song, you need to see a psychiatrist.

10 Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps

One of the coolest bands around. I love Karen’s vocal style and delivery. This is a song that I never get tired of listening to.
