Google exec joins Spotify board
By Andy Malt | Published on Wednesday 23 July 2014
Google is taking over Spotify. Well, not really. Or maybe. Who knows? But according to Re/code, the internet giant’s acting Chief Business Officer and long-time senior staffer, Omid Kordestani, has joined the streaming service’s board of directors.
What’s more, former Google exec Shishir Mehrotra is said to have become a ‘special advisor’ to Spotify recently. All of which suggests that something may be happening between the two companies. Or maybe it doesn’t.
Google has been wandering around poking various streaming services with its shoe to see if they’re worth buying (it recently forked out for Songza, of course). And then last week Daniel Ek said that his company had no imminent plans for an IPO, even though all signs would point towards Spotify definitely having imminent plans for an IPO.
Is it that much of a stretch to speculate that Spotify has dropped its IPO plans because Google’s about to buy it? Yeah, probably.
