Gemma Cairney is to take over the early breakfast slot on BBC Radio 1, filling the two and a half hours before Nick Grimshaw turns up for the Breakfast Show. Currently presenting the weekend breakfast show, she will shift into her new 4am-6.30am weekday slot on 31 Mar.

Commenting on the news, Cairney said: “I am ultimately utterly in love with radio and I had to say yes to doing five shows a week on Radio 1. I take on this new role with an array of studio-worthy pyjamas and pride in the responsibility of becoming a supportive friend of the nation’s early morning risers. Bring it on”.

Outgoing early show presenter Dev will, in a piece of perfect synergy, move over to the weekend breakfast slot. Says he: “I’m really excited about this move and the prospect of bringing my unique brand of professionally ropey radio to weekends. Oh, and I get my life back a bit. Which is nice”.

Suggesting that Cairney is being lined up for bigger things in the future (and possibly taking an accidental dig at Dev’s “professionally ropey radio”), Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper said: “Chris Moyles and Scott Mills both did early breakfast on Radio 1, using it to showcase their creativity. Now it’s Gemma’s turn”.

As previously reported, Cairney also presents ‘Mali Music’, the documentary around which 6music’s upcoming African music weekend is built. You can hear that on Sunday.
