Playlist: In The City 2010

By | Published on Saturday 9 October 2010

Next week sees In The City take over Manchester for three days of live music and industry seminars, from 13-15 Oct. Famously founded by Yvette Livesey and Factory Records boss Tony Wilson, the festival annually showcases the best in underground and emerging musical talent from around the globe, as well as organising debates and educational events for people at all levels of the music industry.

This year, the line-up is looking particularly good, with over 200 acts due to perform. To get us in the mood, we asked the man responsible for finding and booking all these artists, In The City’s Gavin Cooke, to put together this week’s Powers Of Ten playlist.

Gavin told us: “We’re all incredibly excited about this year’s festival. The line-up is looking great, and as well as getting to see a load of very exciting new bands for the first time, we also have headliners like No Age, Mount Kimbie, Sky Larkin and HEALTH. We also have an iTunes album due to hit the store imminently with 20 of our unsigned bands, and all the bands playing have a sound clip on our site and iPhone app to check out. We think this year’s line up is better than its ever been, at all levels of band”.

01 Male Bonding – Year’s Not Long
Two and a half minutes of guitars, fuzz and exuberance. One of the best albums of the year, and their gig at Night & Day is going to be packed and very hot.

02 Ed Wood Jr – Montagnes en Russe

From Lille in France, these guys, more than anyone else, were complete discoveries for us this year. Mathy and loud, we’ve put them on straight after HEALTH, so hopefully more than a few people will stumble upon them.

03 Oberhofer – AWY FRM U

More youthful exuberance, this time from New York. This has been on several blogs this year and hopefully their first UK shows will stoke up even more interest.

04 Still Corners – Endless Summer

This is both lovely and intense, with dreamy verses, sped up choruses and a massive feedback outro. We were desperate to get them on the bill and thankfully it worked out.

05 Glasser – Apply

One of the more recent contenders for album of the year. Glasser will headline NME Radar’s show – on a stop off between Paris and Oslo – we’re very lucky, and this will be a final night highlight for sure. Perhaps the biggest ‘don’t miss’ show of the festival.

06 Dutch Uncles – The Ink

Another NME night band, Dutch Uncles are our local heroes and have had a great year, and really stepped up their game since breaking through at last year’s ITC. There’s an album due and we’re hoping this show is another landmark for them.

07 Crystal Fighters – Plage

This is an album track from their debut ‘Star Of Love’ – only released this week – but this song could be a contender for an unlikely Top Ten appearance next year, it’s been in my head all week long. Catchy and energetic – and everyone knows how great they are live too.

08 White Ring – Suffocation

The first UK appearance for one of the leading ‘witch house’ bands. Another blog favourite, this will be strobe lights, smoke machines and shrieking vocals all the way. There’s quite a big Crystal Castles influence and the live show should make it even more menacing.

09 Kisses – Bermuda

Smooth disco pop that had a release on Transparent earlier this year, which is always a great stamp of approval. We’ve got their first two UK gigs, the first of which will be in an 80 capacity room – possibly the hottest ticket of the festival.

10 Lady Chann – Sticky Situation

Lady Chann will be bringing the dancehall to one of our closing parties in the early hours of Friday/Saturday. Expect heavy bass, lightning-fast rapping and a huge party to celebrate what’s been a great 2010 so far for Lady Chann.
