Five Day Forecast – w/c 9 Jan 2012

It’s the ninth day of January, which must mean it’s time for the first Five Day Forecast of 2012. I hope it is, because I’ve written one. Below are some events, releases and gigs that are all coming your way this week. You may like to attend/obtain any one of them. If you’re heading over to Eurosonic, I hope you have lots of fun. Don’t worry about me stuck back here in England. No, really, it’s fine, you go. Go on. Bye.
01: Eurosonic Noorderslag. Wasting no time in kicking off the 2012 music industry conference and showcase festival calendar, Groningen in the Netherlands plays host to Eurosonic Noorderslag this week, beginning on Wednesday and running through to the not so early hours of Sunday morning. As well as a large selection of music industry talks, debates and panels, hundreds of bands from across Europe will play, many of whom will score festival bookings across Europe this summer.
02: European Festival Awards and European Border Breaker Awards. Speaking of European Festivals, the European Festival Awards will be one of two awards ceremonies, along with the European Border Breakers Awards, to take place at Eurosonic Noorderslag. The EFAs will acknowledge artists and festivals across the region that were outstanding in 2012, while Glastonbury’s Michael Eavis will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Meanwhile, the EBBAs will recognise ten artists whose success spread throughout Europe in 2011, with Anna Calvi representing the UK.
03: BRIT Awards nominations. Sticking with awards, the nominations for this year’s BRITs will be announced in the ballroom at The Savoy this Thursday, which is nice. As well as the reading out of lists, there will be performances from some of the nominees too. Sadly, if John Cage does get the nomination for Best International Breakthrough Artist (for which he genuinely was eligible, thanks to chart position of the charity release of his silent composition ‘4’33”’ in 2010) he won’t be able to attend on account of being dead for 20 years. Previously announced Critics’ Choice winner Emelie Sande will be on hand though.
04: New releases. The 2012 release schedule is yet to fully thaw off after the festive break, but there are still some albums well worth your attention this week. The Maccabees release their third album, ‘Given To The Wild’, The Walkmen re-release their fantastic ‘Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone’ long player, and Blonde Redhead’s compilation to raise money for the ongoing Japanese relief effort is also out, featuring contributions from Interpol, Deerhunter, Four Tet, Liars, Broadcast and more.
05: Gigs. Continuing this week and on and off until 19 Jan is Artrocker’s New Blood festival, which is showcasing new bands at the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen in East London. On Tuesday night Visions Of Trees are due to headline, with the likes of Manflu, Severin, Younghusband, The Laurel Collective, and Citizens! amongst those due to take the stage later this month. Also playing elsewhere in our nation’s capital this week are Kwes at The Social, Kode9 at Fabric, Rustie at The Nest, Brontide at The Lexington, Hexstatic, Plaid and DJ Food at Koko, Wiley at Proud2, and Slabdragger at the Brixton Windmill.
