Five Day Forecast – w/c 5 Mar 2012

It’s Monday, it’s a new week, and you’re sitting there at your desk, slightly dazed, wondering what happened last week. I’m not sure I can help you with that. Unless you what to know what happened in the music world last week, in which case, I’m your man. You should go and listen to the latest edition of the CMU podcast, which you can find here. If you want to know what’s going to happen this coming week, well I can help you with that too. Right here…
01: ILMC. The International Live Music Conference, as no one ever calls it, kicks off this Thursday for the 24th time. For reasons I’m not entirely sure of, the conference this year bills itself as happening in a post-apocalyptic world and claims to have adopted another name no one will ever use, The International League To Mend Civilisation. For all the talk of zombies on its website, I think it’s more likely that there’ll be discussion of financial wobbles in the previously ‘safe’ live music industry, plus some debate about a certain Channel 4 documentary. Or, as the website puts it, “survival, change and building for the future”.
02: Abbey Road Seminars. As part of the legendary studio complex’s ongoing 80th anniversary celebrations, extra dates have been added for a behind-the-scenes event that will take place in Abbey Road Studios’ still working Studio Two space. While gaining insight into Abbey Road’s 80 year history through rarely seen photographs, instruments, studio equipment and archive tapes, visitors will also imbibe two hour’s worth of wisdom courtesy of Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan, both experts on EMI heritage and authors of ‘Recording The Beatles’.
03: Choice Music Prize and Australian Music Prize. Australia and Ireland will both select their best albums of the last year, in their separate Mercury-style awards. Amongst those nominated for Ireland’s Choice Music Prize are The Japanese Popstars, Lisa Hannigan, And So I Watch You From Afar and Cashier No 9. Meanwhile, over at the Australian Music Prize, Gotye, Abbe May, Kimbra and The Middle East are amongst those in the running.
04: New releases. Shitting heck there are a lot of new releases out this week. Let’s kick off with Team Me‘s ‘To The Treetops!’, because that’s one of my favourite albums of the year so far. Also out this week is ‘Ekstasis’ by Julia Holter, which I’ve not listened to yet but, based on last year’s ‘Tragedy’, I am very excited about. Also out this week are albums from Dry The River, 120 Days, Bruce Springsteen, Andrew Bird and Kid Cudi’s WZRD project, plus singles from Tom Jones and Jack White, Lil Wayne and Limp Bizkit, Stooshe and New Build.
05: Gigs. Hey, let’s have another mention of Team Me, as they’re also one of my favourite live bands at the moment. And you can see them playing live at The Lexington in London this Wednesday, which is nice. Also doing the one-off London gig thing are Clock Opera, who will be at East London’s Victorian Vaults on Thursday, while this very evening the Young Turks label will host a free night at the 100 Club. On tour this week you can catch Earth, Sinead O’Connor, Wu Lyf and The Maccabees.
