So, I spent three days last week at the brilliant G! Festival in the village of Göta on the Faroe Islands. And, hey, I liked it so much I decided to stay! Well, sort of. Right now I should be well on my way back to London, but sometimes things don’t work like that in the North Atlantic. So, here are some things I may or may not be able to join in with this week.

01: BT London Live opening ceremony concert. So, the Olympics finally starts this weekend, with the opening ceremony taking place on Friday. Over in Hyde Park, meanwhile, Live Nation will be holding the first of its BT-sponsored Olympics concerts the same night, showcasing the best musical talent on offer in Britain. Well, Snow Patrol, Stereophonics, Duran Duran and Paulo Nutini anyway. I hope they’re all being paid more than £3 an hour for the privilege.

02: Rounder Records closes. Brighton record shop Rounder Records, which has been running for 46 years, will close its doors for the final time this Sunday. Physical music shops disappearing from towns and cities around the UK is a sadly common occurrence, of course, though Rounder was (is) particularly loved by many both in and out of Brighton. Though, alas, not enough it seems.

03: Deadline for submissions to AIM Awards. If you were hoping to be nominated in this year’s Independent Music Awards, you’d better get on and make yourself known quickly. The deadline for submissions to be considered in nine categories at the Association Of Independent Music’s big awards bash this year – including Best Independent Festival, Best Live Act and Best Small Label – is this Friday.

04: New releases. So, those of you who have been hanging around waiting for the physical release of Frank Ocean‘s debut album proper, ‘Channel Orange’, can finally get hold of that today. While you’re doing that, you could also grab new albums by Purity Ring, Passion Pit, Micachu And The Shapes, plus Peggy Sue‘s covers album, Slipknot‘s best of compilation, and new singles from The Antlers and Foxygen.

05: Gigs. Obviously you’re all looking forward to seeing Duran Duran in Hyde Park, but there are other gigs on in the UK this week that aren’t even Olympics-related. Who’d have thought? You could catch Morrissey and Eddie Vedder playing in Manchester (not together), a whole night of Hospital Records goodness in London, plus shows from Frankie Rose, Micachu And The Shapes, Parakeet, Mazes, Savages, and Jenny O.

So there are some things for you to enjoy. The Five Day Forecast will be going on its summer break for August, so I’ll see you back in this slot in September. Hopefully I’ll be writing to you from London again by then!
