So, are you feeling refreshed after a hard day treating your mother right? I hope at the very least you signed her up for CMU Daily so she can get all the latest music and music business news delivered to her inbox every morning.You did that, right?
Oh well, you’ll just have to wait until next year. It’ll seem disingenuous if you do it now. I hope you’re happy. See what you’ve done to your poor mother? Do you see? Also, here are some things that are happening this week (that your poor mother won’t know about).
01: Record Store Day launch. Public Image Ltd will perform and Orbital will DJ at an event to launch this year’s Record Store Day this evening. The show is due to take place at a secret location in Shoreditch, and will also be live-streamed via Boiler Room TV and the RSD website. The CMU team will be there en masse to ensure that John Lydon’s every move is documented. Possibly.
02: Copyright law consultation closes. The government’s previously reported consultation of proposed changes to copyright law (stemming from the also previously reported Hargreaves Review) closes this Wednesday. Various music industry people have responded. Most will probably question a suggestion made in the review’s initial proposals that the proposed changes in IP law – especially with regards fair dealing – will boost the British economy by £7.9 billion (£2 billion of which alone, the government reckons, will come from legalising so called ‘format shifting’). Former rocker Pete Wishart, now an MP and member of parliament’s All-Party Intellectual Property Group, called those figures “bonkers”, while UK Music chief Jo Dipple says: “There is scant evidence that [these] recommendations will lead to significant economic growth, and certainly not the billions quoted by ministers”. It remains to be seen how the government responds to the various submissions made from the content and tech industries, and other interested parties.
03: Abbey Road Seminars. As part of the legendary studio complex’s ongoing 80th anniversary celebrations, this weekend sees the second run of a behind-the-scenes event that takes place in Abbey Road Studios’ still working Studio Two space. While gaining insight into Abbey Road’s 80 year history through rarely seen photographs, instruments, studio equipment and archive tapes, visitors will also imbibe two hour’s worth of wisdom courtesy of Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan, both experts on EMI heritage and authors of ‘Recording The Beatles’.
04: New releases. Two albums I’ve been listening to a lot over the last few months are the new efforts by Frankie Rose and Soap&Skin. Both are very good and out this week. Other albums out today are the latest offerings from Odd Future, Jonsi, Paul Weller, Kindness, Miike Snow and Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, plus the soundtrack to ‘The Hunger Games’, which features contributions from Arcade Fire, amongst others. There are some pretty exciting singles out too, all of which you should check out, from Bernholz, Selebrities, 2562, and the first release from Andrew Weatherall’s new vinyl-only label by Timothy J Fairplay.
05: Gigs. Gigs, eh? There are some good one-offs in London this week. I’m looking forward to seeing Jenny Hval at The Borderline tonight, while tomorrow Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore is curating a night at Café Oto, while over at The Slaughtered lamb on the same night you’ll be able to catch Karima Francis, and FWD at Plastic People this Thursday will feature a DJ set from Distance. Also out and about around the country this week are Charlie Simpson, Alex Winston, The Shins, Los Campesinos!, The Wave Pictures, Kindness, former leader of The Books Nick Zammuto, Jakwob and PEACE.
