The NME will publish its last ever edition carrying a cover price on 29 Jul (though it will be dated 1 Aug). And for those of you paying proper attention, yes, that does mean there will be a six week gap before the new free version is launched.

But don’t worry, the final paid edition will be a bumper issue featuring 132 pages, looking back at key moments in the title’s 63 year history, with archive photography, former writers returning to look back at old features, and other retrospective type stuff. Before going free, that final issue will move in the other direction, charging an increased cover price of £3.50 because of all the extra gubbins.

Says Editor Mike Williams: “As we move into this exciting next chapter for NME, it’s fitting that we celebrate the first 63 years of this amazing brand with a massive party on the pages of the last paid-for issue”.

He goes on: “Across the years we’ve provided a platform to showcase the talents of some of the best artists, photographers and journalists around the world. Their work has inspired the next incarnation of NME, which will reach a bigger audience than at any other time in our history. I can’t wait to get stuck into our vast and mind-blowing archive and start putting the issue together”.

The new look free version of NME will launch on 18 Sep.
