Single Review: Esser – Work It Out (Transgressive)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 23 February 2009
Transgressive Records’ hotly-tipped newish act Esser returns with next release, ‘Work It Out’. Heavily plugged by Zane Lowe for one, Esser’s mix of electronica and pop seems to be winning an increasing number of fans, and with a Kaiser Chiefs support slot just announced that is likely to continue as the year develops. That said, this particular single isn’t the best introduction to all things Esser, consisting, as it does, of pretty mundane lyrics on top of a pretty standard electronica music bed. What’s gone before is a much better starting point – ‘Headlock’ in particular. Still, for those already turned on by Esser’s charms, ‘Work It Out’, while nothing out of the ordinary, is harmless enough and should keep his growing fanbase happy while we wait for another piece of high-quality ‘Headlock’-standard electro pop.
