Eminem to star in boxing movie
By CMU Editorial | Published on Friday 17 December 2010
Eminem is to star in ‘Southpaw’, a loosely autobiographical movie about an up-and-coming boxer who overcomes personal tragedy to triumph both in the boxing ring and his own life.
It’s the rapper’s second starring role, after 2002’s ‘8 Mile’, a loosely autobiographical movie about an up-and-coming rapper who overcomes personal tragedy to triumph both on the rap battle stage and his own life. The new movie bears some resemblance to ‘Rocky’, a fictional movie about an up-and-coming boxer who overcomes personal tragedy to triumph both in the boxing ring and his own life.
Of course, the keen-eyed amongst you will have spotted that Eminem has never been a boxer. Hence the use of the word “loosely” before “autobiographical”. According to reports, boxing will act as a metaphor for the period in the last decade when Eminem sat around taking prescription drugs and releasing albums that no one liked that much. It seems writers thought some boxing would be more fun than a film that followed a rich rapper sitting around taking prescription drugs and releasing albums that no one liked that much.
Writer Kurt Stutter told Deadline: “In a way, this is a continuation of the ‘8 Mile’ story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life”.
