Dream Themes launch YouTube soap opera Thamesmeerd
By Andy Malt | Published on Wednesday 17 February 2016
TV theme tune covers band Dream Themes have branched out into the world of soap operas. Every word of that last sentence is true. Available on YouTube, ‘Thamesmeerd’ follows the hectic life of the band as they hang around in their flat, local pub The Dishwasher and new café OMG Crisps (“Today’s soup of the day is crisps”).
The show was conceived by bassist Paul Kelly, who says: “Before they’ve seen episode one, people have asked, naturally, whether YouTube made a bid for the rights to ‘Thamesmeerd’ and I can confirm that this isn’t the case. We decided that we’d give the show away to begin with, wait until it has become a global viral hit, and then make money off tea towel sales and other merchandise”.
“We’ve gone for a raw, unrehearsed, ‘made for less than 50 quid’ feel for this series”, he adds. “The actors make it look as though they’ve never performed before and the cinematography makes it look as though the whole thing was just filmed on iPhones”.
