Devo guitarist Bob Casale, a founder member of the new wave group, died from heart failure on Monday, aged 61. The news was announced by his brother and bandmate Gerald Casale on Facebook.

Gerald Casale wrote on the band’s official Facebook page: “As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning. He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got. He was excited about the possibility of [frontman] Mark Mothersbaugh allowing Devo to play shows again. His sudden death from conditions that lead to heart failure came as a total shock to us all”.

Devo formed in 1972, and although he left the group for a period in the 90s, Bob Casale performed on all nine of the band’s albums to date.
