Dave Lee Travis charged with sexual offences
By Andy Malt | Published on Friday 16 August 2013
Former Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis has been charged with eleven counts of indecent assault and one of sexual assault, Scotland Yard announced yesterday.
As previously reported, Travis was questioned by police in November last year as part of the ongoing Operation Yewtree, which was sparked by the high profile revelations regarding child abuse conducted by Jimmy Savile over several decades. DLT’s police questioning followed accusations by two women that he had touched them inappropriately. He was then re-arrested in March of this year.
Travis’s alleged incidents are not thought to be directly related to Savile in any way, and he has been keen to stress throughout that the allegations he faces do not involve child abuse, though one of his accusers was fifteen at the time of the alleged assault.
In a statement about the charges against Travis, who is being charged under his real name, David Griffin, the Crown Prosecution Service said: “We have carefully considered the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police Service as part of Operation Yewtree. Having completed our review, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest for Mr Griffin to be charged”.
The presenter has always denied any wrongdoing. He is now due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on 23 Aug.
