Conor Oberst accepts apology from rape accuser
By Andy Malt | Published on Friday 18 July 2014
Conor Oberst has apparently ceased legal action against a woman who claimed that he had raped her, after she issued an apology and retraction this week.
As previously reported, the comment was posted anonymously under an article on the xoJane website, and subsequently deleted. However, after discussion of the claim spread, Oberst’s lawyer identified the poster and sued her for libel, demanding $1 million in damages. Earlier this week, a statement from the accuser was published by Oberst’s lawyer, in which she retracted her claims, saying that she “made up those lies about him to get attention while I was going through a difficult period in my life”.
A statement from Oberst, published by Billboard, reads: “I have accepted [the] apology and retraction to clear my name. This has been extremely difficult and stressful for me personally and for those I love. I’m appreciative of the family, friends, fans and business partners who supported me throughout this and look forward to happier times as we all move forward with our lives”.
