Other notable announcements and developments today…

• Spotify is about to start offering premium-only content, reckons Digital Music News. The site claims this is a concession to get the major labels to sign new licensing agreements with the streaming service, and that Daniel Ek “hates the idea” but doesn’t really have a choice. If this is true, I bet Taylor Swift will claim it as her victory.

• One Direction’s surprise single ‘Drag Me Down’ has become their most successful single ever, shifting 500,000 copies worldwide in its first week, and being streamed 17.7 million times. And the money only has to be split four ways now. Hurrah!

• Peter Andre has signed a “six figure” record deal with Warner Music, according to The Sun. Last year the singer released a Christmas album through Cooking Vinyl sold exclusively in Iceland stores. This could be even bigger than that.

• “I told them the other day, ‘Let’s take it even further. Let’s make our ‘Purple Rain’, let’s make our ‘The Wall’. With a movie – not just the album, but do a movie”, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor told Q103 Albany of his recent discussions with the band about their future. This will not end well.

• Here’s Rita Ora’s new single, ‘Body On Me’.

• “Think you’ll like this”, said an email I received last week. “It’s the new video from Darkstar, and features a Tory koala forcing his employee to give him head whilst listening to a David Cameron speech”. And it is. And oh my God it does.

• Speaking of people dressed as animals doing things you wouldn’t expect, here’s the new video from Girl Band for new single, ‘Paul’.

• Scandal have released a new single, ‘Stamp!’, the video for which you can see here.

• Blondes have released a new EP through RVNG Intl, hear the video for title track ‘Persuasion’.

• Pinkshinyultrablast have a new single coming out on 2 Oct. It’s called ‘Kiddy Pool Dreams’ and you can listen to it here.

• Visual kei band The Gazette have released the lyric video for new single ‘Ominous’, taken from forthcoming new album ‘Dogma’.

• Hospital Records has defended surgeons who listen to drum n bass in the operating theatre. “Doctors raving it up in their scrubs, gun fingers and scalpels thrown about all over, but dance music creates a positive and uplifting energy, which can obviously be appreciated in what can be a very bleak situation”, a spokesperson told Thump.
