Other notable announcements and developments today…
• Universal has announced a new joint venture with Petrol Records, which reps the INXS recordings catalogue outside North America. “I’m THRILLED to be building on our special and long term relationship with [Petrol chairman] Chris Murphy and INXS”, says lord of the Universal manor Lucian Grainge.
• Producer Shift K3Y is launching a new Sony imprint, called Thru The Nit3. Initial releases will be a series of EPs featuring his own collaboration with artists such as MJ Cole, DJ Zinc, Chris Lorenzo, Preditah and more. “This is a soundtrack to my night life, coming to you from my imagination”, he says of the new tracks.
• Billy Corgan has said that he is in contact with all three other original members of The Smashing Pumpkins, but in terms of a reunion, they’re “not at that point”. In a Facebook video, he said: “We’re not rushing to something, we have to repair some things between us, and see what’s out there for us, if those opportunities are even there”.
• We saw the trailer for one film starring Janelle Monáe earlier this week. Now here’s another one, for ‘Moonlight’.
• Yasiin Bey features on new Tribe Called Red track ‘RED’. Watch the video here.
• Crystal Fighters have released the first track from their upcoming third album. This is ‘All Night’.
• Winner of the 2014 Polaris Prize, Tanya Tagaq has announced that she will release her second album, ‘Retribution’, on 21 Oct. From it, this is ‘Aorta’.
• The soundtrack of David Bowie film ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’ by The Mamas & The Papas’ John Phillips and Stomu Yamash’ta is to be released for the first time after “the recent discovery of lost master tapes”. It’s out on 9 Sep.
• Speaking of ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’, it’s being re-released to mark its 40th anniversary. A 4K restoration will be screened in UK cinema on 9 Sep, and it will be available on DVD and Blu-ray. It’s a good film, you should watch it.
• Earl Sweatshirt’s done a new single for Adult Swim. This is ‘Balance’.
• Preoccupations, the band you once called Viet Cong, have released a new single. Here’s ‘Degraded’. Their first album under their new name is out on 16 Sep. And they’ll be touring the UK in November too.
• DD Dumbo will release his debut album, ‘Utopia Defeated’, on 7 Oct. Here’s new single ‘Walrus’.
• Bayonne has released the video for the second single from his debut album. Here’s ‘Appeals’.
• The Cribs have announced that they’ll play a one-off “old skool set” at London’s Oval Space on 1 Sep. They will play a “classic 2005 era setlist”.
