So, this is the week that Apple will finally launch its long talked about streaming service. Will it be the death of Pandora? Will it be the death of radio? Will it be the death of music altogether? Who knows, but it will definitely be one of those things. Unless it’s a massive disappointment and a big fat failure. Or just another streaming service that co-exists with all the others. But it’ll be fun finding out. Or not.
Anyway, here’s a round up of everything you should be prepared for this week in music, including that thing I’ve already banged on about at length.
iTunes Radio goes live. After years of speculation and months of waiting, iTunes Radio is expected to go live this Wednesday, along with the launch of the new version of Apple’s iOS software. Will it rise up to dominate the streaming market? Well, we’ll see, won’t we? It certainly has the potential to draw in mainstream users where all-you-can-eat services like Spotify struggle. Or it might just be rubbish.
ERA AGM. The Entertainment Retailers Association will hold its Annual General Meeting this Wednesday over at The BPI’s offices. Focus for the morning’s events will be split between music and videogames.
CMU Insights. The latest season of CMU Insights training courses begins this Wednesday with an afternoon session entitled ‘A Complete Overview Of The Music Business in 2013’. There are a couple of spaces left if you book quick! For full details on all five courses and how to book, click here.
New releases. Continuing their coy announcement of events surrounding their tenth anniversary, The Killers last week announced via morse code that they’d be premiering a new single this week. Over to new albums, and this week you’re spoiled for choice with releases from Avicii, The Wanted, MGMT, Manic Street Preachers, Elvis Costello and The Roots, Cloud Control, Bill Callahan, Body/Head, Gang Colours, Crystal Stilts, Daedelus, Keep Shelly In Athens, Las Kellies, 65daysofstatic, and Sky Larkin. There’s also a new book on the history of 4AD, an EP from Aidan Moffat as L Pierre and, perhaps most important of all, a new single from Britney Spears.
Gigs and tours. Well, there are some one-off shows of note this week in London, including the marvellous-sounding Joy Division Reworked, Mikky Ekko, and Lorde, who is playing her first London show. Commencing tours this week are Fleetwood Mac, Paramore, James Blake, McFly and Sky Larkin.
