The first line-up announcements for Great Escape 2016 have been unveiled this morning, including confirmation that CMU Insights @ TGE will return at the core of the convention side of the proceedings. Which kind of makes this top story a bit of a plug, but still, we’re excited, humour us.

So yes, CMU Insights will once again present four full-day conference strands at Dukes @ Komedia as part of The Great Escape, each one a mini-conference in itself combining a unique blend of industry training, original research, case studies, expert interviews and lively panel debates. The four stands next May will be as follows…

Transparency! Data! Blockchain! Let’s make buzzwords happen!
‘Transparency’ has been the big buzzword in the music industry this year. Everyone agrees that everyone else needs to be more transparent. But transparent about what exactly? We investigate what should be done to better explain, process and audit digital income, and how copyright data and the blockchain fit in.

Who the hell is buying all these CDs?
CD sales are holding up better than most people expected. So who, exactly, is buying all these CDs? We consider the physical market: how do we maximise the potential of retail, venue and direct-to-fan channels? And what other products can artists and labels sell beyond CDs, vinyl and t-shirts?

What if YouTube actually is the future?
There’s a lot of hate for YouTube in music circles just now, yet it remains a key channel. What are the issues? Are artists, labels and publishers using YouTube to its full potential? And what about the YouTubers? How can we collaborate with this important new community of influential creators?

What has the music industry ever done for you?
How is the music industry recruiting, training and caring for its people, both on and off the stage? We look at diversity in the sector, at how artists and execs are educated and informed, and at how the industry can better safeguard the wellbeing and mental health of its people.

CMU Insights @ TGE will be presented by CMU MD and Business Editor Chris Cooke, who says: “The new full-day mini-conference format really worked for the CMU strands at The Great Escape this year, and it’s exciting to be back in programming mode as we look ahead to next May. With a full day to delve into each of our topics, our sessions will combine the kind of training and education we do all year round with the great mix of experts and innovators from across the world that it’s only possible to pull together in one place at an event as big as The Great Escape”.

Meanwhile, on the return of CMU Insights @ TGE in 2016, Great Escape Event Manager Kevin Moore adds: “With so much going on at The Great Escape, our conference sessions really have to challenge and inspire our busy delegation to capture their attention, and I think the packed rooms back in May this year proved that the CMU Insights conference strands do just that. Once again we’ll be inviting leading minds from across the music, media and digital sectors to share their knowledge with our delegates, and I look forward to revealing who those people are in the coming months”.

But what, you might already be asking, about the music? Well, TGE2016 will showcase over 450 bands across its three days in Brighton, with 50 of those acts announced this morning. That includes the first of the ‘spotlight shows’ which will present key acts in key venues, and which are open to both TGE wristband holders with a ‘top-up’ and standalone ticket holders too. The first of these will see buzzy buzzy pop-duo Oh Wonder perform at All Saints Church with support from Shura and Mura Masa.

Meanwhile, the full list of bands announced today is as follows: Alina Orlova, Axel Flovent, Banff, Banfi, Beach Baby, Boo Seeka, Cherie And Renno, Conner Youngblood, Dagny, Declan Mckenna, Dilly Dally, Dirty Frigs, Dorsal Fins, Drones Club, Elle Exxe, Fenne Lily, Fort Lean, Foxtrott, Girli, Holy Esque, Isaac Gracie, Jack Watts, James Gruntz, Junk Son, Kloe, Lcmdf, Methyl Ethel, Mura Masa, Mystery Jets, Natur3, North East Party House, Oh Wonder, Otherkin, Owen Rabbit, Pumarosa, Rukhsana Merrise, Saint Sister, Salute, Shura, Slum Sociable, Strange Bones, Tigercub, Timberwolf, Trudy, Tuff Love, Vant and Will.
