CMU Beef Of The Week #67: Lil Wayne v A lot of people who worked on Tha Carter III

It’s entirely possible that Lil Wayne is aiming for some sort of record, because it’s quite amazing that one artist can be sued by so many people in relation to the same record.

Since last year, producers Bangladesh, Jim Jonsin, and Darius ‘Deezle’ Harrison have all sued the rapper and his Cash Money label over unpaid royalties in relation to tracks they worked on for his ‘Tha Carter III’ album. But then last week, things stepped up when not one but two more producers weighed in making the same claims.

First, producer and songwriter David Kirkwood filed a claim saying he is owed $1.5 million for royalties and “production services” in relation to the track ‘Love Me Or Hate Me’.

Then towards the end of last week, Dallas-based production duo Play-N-Skillz filed legal papers claiming they were due royalties for their work on the ‘Tha Carter III’ track ‘Got Money’, one of the biggest hits from the album. According to AllHipHop.com, in their lawsuit Play-N-Skillz say they reckon they are due $1 million from the rapper and his various companies and affiliates.

With all these claims mounting up, the lowest asking for $500,000, it seems Wayne might have to fork out some series cash in the near future, if only to stop all these cases going to court. Luckily, he’s got a new album (the cunningly-titled ‘Tha Carter IV’) on the horizon, which should help to pay for some of it.

Though before he spends all the money generated by the new album paying off those who worked on the last one, let’s hope he remembers all the producers due a cut of the new record’s royalties. That’s assuming Wayne can persuade any producers to work with him these days!
