CMU Beef Of The Week #181: Kanye & Kim v Chad

Just because Kanye West hired a baseball stadium to propose to Kim Kardashian last month, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t meant to be very private moment for the celebrity couple. Well, other than all the friends and family members who were invited along for the ride.

And now Chad Hurley, a founder of YouTube who is these days busy trying to get his latest start-up, Vine/Instagram competitor Mixbit, off the ground, has sullied the whole magical moment by posting a video of the proposal on his tawdry new website. And then tweeting about it. And sending out a press release.

And Kanye and Kim are pissed. And not just because they’d sold exclusive rights to the moment to an affiliate of E!, ie the broadcaster of ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’. Though mainly for that reason.

And so Kanye and Kim are suing Chad. According to TMZ, the couple’s lawsuit says that the tech entrepreneur wasn’t even invited to the event at San Francisco’s AT&T Park, but successfully blagged his way in, but only after signing an agreement in which he promised not the film the moment.

Says the suit: “Exclusive rights, such as those sold by plaintiffs to publication of video of the event, are particularly valuable. If people violate these rights … they are of substantially diminished value”. The Ks are suing Hurley and his company Avos Systems for unspecified damages.

And Kanye in particular is likely to have some spare time to focus on this legal battle, given he’s just cancelled a load of live dates after a 60 foot LED screen used in his ‘Yeezus’ shows was damaged when the truck transporting it was involved in an accident earlier this week.
