CMU Beef Of The Week #124: Perez Hilton v Zayn Malik

Zayn Malik

Hey, do you like reading between the lines and wild speculation? Well good, because that’s what you’re going to get. Hold tight.

OK, our story begins on Tuesday over on the Twitter feed of One Direction’s Zayn Malik, when he tweeted: “The reason I don’t tweet as much as I used to, is because I’m sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily. Goodbye Twitter”, before adding: “My fans that have something nice to say can tweet me on the One Direction account”.

And with that, Zayn Malik deleted his Twitter account.

An hour later, Perez Hilton swung into action, tweeting: “One Direction’s Zayn Malik DELETES his Twitter! Called it! I said he’d be the first to leave 1D! This is the beginning!”, linking to a new post on his site covering this hot topic.

Oh Perez, your ability to draw your own lines to read between is only matched by your inflated sense of importance. How he got ‘Zayn is leaving 1D’ from a tweet asking people to only contact him via the band’s collective Twitter account I do not know. But he did, and One Direction fans didn’t take too kindly to it, making Hilton’s name a trending topic on Twitter as they bombarded him with criticism and threats.

Perez, of course, loved this. So, presumably in an effort to keep things rolling, he put a new post live on his blog entitled “One Direction’s Zayn Malik Caught Cheating On His GF On Camera?!”, which features a video shot through the spy hole on a hotel room door purported to show Malik telling a girl to come back to his room after a security guard (who has just sent her away) goes to sleep.

You have to take Perez’s word for it, because you can’t actually see anything. Still, he took the timing of Malik’s Twitter exit to mean that “the cheating rumors could be true, as Zayn deleted his Twitter earlier after all the hate tweets he’d been receiving!”

But now, it seemed, Perez had pushed things too far. And had underestimated the breadth of support for Zayn. Tweets and (subsequently) media reports claimed that Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus had all unfollowed Hilton in protest against his baiting of Malik and his fans.

Though, all that didn’t seem very likely, and it wasn’t. Britney Spears does still follow Perez, though Gaga and Miley don’t. But maybe Gaga never did, Miley certainly didn’t (after all, she and he have history). She tweeted on Wednesday: “I don’t know why everyone’s saying I unfollowed Perez, I never followed in the first place. I have no hard feelings just don’t care to gossip”.

Anyway, just after Miley’s tweet went out, Zayn reactivated his account. Announcing his return, he wrote: “Sorry, I was getting some abuse on Twitter but I don’t want to let my fans down. So I am back!”

Of course, Perez Hilton reported this on his blog, writing: “Twitter is complete again! … Luckily, Zayn realized how much [his fans] needed his 140-character life updates, so he rejoined the Twitterverse with disregard to the haters who caused him to leave in the first place … Glad to see ya back, Zayn! We hope you always feel the love!”

It’s hard to tell if that last comment was meant sarcastically, or if Perez suddenly remembered recording this video:
