Cassette Store Day planned
By Chris Cooke | Published on Tuesday 16 July 2013
Yes, people, Cassette Store Day is now a thing. On 7 Sep, Rough Trade East in London and Burger Records in Fullerton California will celebrate that music format no one loved. And why not?
Aping Record Store Day, a number of indie labels will make special releases or re-releases available on good old fashion cassette as part of the celebrations.
Organisers say: “No longer the inadequate, younger sibling of vinyl and CD, the humble cassette has been making a resurgence of late. Proving that cassette tapes are not just for those of us who remember buying Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ with birthday money, or making lovingly compiled mix tapes for the object of our teenage affections, International Cassette Store Day 2013 is a celebration of a physical product that is accessible, fun, cheap and still going strong in the turbulent current musical climate”.
As previously reported, UK cassette single sales trebled in 2012. Though that brought them up to just over 600, while album sales totally over 3800. It remains to be seen if Cassette Store Day can help to boost sales of tapes in the same way Record Store Day has for vinyl.
In store events on the day will include a ‘who can fix a jammed cassette player the fastest’ challenge and a ‘spot the walkman that needs new batteries’ competition. Possibly.
