Camden Barfly to become The Assembly
By Andy Malt | Published on Thursday 18 August 2016
Are you one of those people who refused to acknowledge that The Monarch in Camden was renamed The Barfly? And did you say things like, “The Monarch, mate. It’ll always be The Monarch”, any time anyone asked you if you’d like to go to a gig at The Barfly, instead of just saying yes or no? Well here’s some news you’ll hate: The Barfly in Camden is changing its name to The Camden Assembly.
The good news is, a whole new generation of gig goers can now moan about the irrelevant name of a place. “It’ll always be the Barfly for me”, they’ll say, as Monarch fans quietly melt into the floor with anger.
Well, hey, Monarch lovers, at least you can go down the road to that pub that took over the Monarch name. What will Barfly people do? That name’s probably trademarked or something. And it being the very last Barfly venue left, the brand is basically now dead and gone. Merely a thing to be talked about late at night in hushed tones.
The name change comes as new owner The Columbo Group relaunches the venue. The Barfly having been bought by the live firm from MAMA & Company – following the latter’s acquisition by Live Nation – last year, along with The Jazz Café.
The Jazz Café got to keep its name, of course. Though with the Barfly brand being very much part of MAMA’s heritage, the name change probably makes sense, and is possibly a legal requirement.
The switch officially takes place next month, with live events re-commencing on 16 Sep. Find out more here.
