BRIT nominations unleashed
By Chris Cooke | Published on Friday 16 January 2015
Ah, the BRITs. The BRITs, the BRITs, the BRITs. Do you know, I’ve kind of warmed to the BRITs since the BBC Music Awards. I mean they may be an obscene, vapid, pointless waste of space, energy and time, but at least it’s the evil capitalists at Mastercard that pay for it all, rather than us the licence fee payers of Great Britain. And God Only Knows, that’s a priceless distinction right there.
And anyway, what do you mean obscene, vapid and pointless you cynical nay-sayer of all that is great in British cultural endeavour? I mean, Sam Smith is up for five awards. Five awards! That’s five awards. And I mean these aren’t the Grammys where there are so many categories everybody is up for at least five awards. These are the BRITs. So that’s an amazing achievement that will surely result in the kind of excitement levels that haven’t been seen since, well, wow, certainly since that cat-on-a-skateboard video appeared on my Facebook feed yesterday.
And that’s just the start of it! Ant & Dec will be hosting, you know, like it’s 1998 all over again. And wouldn’t that be great if it was? Though to remind you that that’s not actually the case, there’ll be a live vote via the Twitters to ascertain just who it was who made the best promotional pop video in the year just gone.
On top of that, Ed Sheeran, One Direction and Jessie Ware could all pick up a Tracey Emin-designed bit of tat. If that hasn’t sold it to you, well, that’s probably why I’ve not been hired to do the publicity for this year’s BRITs.
Anyway, it all helps to sell some records and without record sales we’d all be out of a job, so shut up your moaning and digest, accept and acclaim these here BRIT nominations for this year of our Lord Almighty Twenty Fifteen.
