By Andy Malt | Published on Tuesday 25 February 2014
Devo guitarist, keyboard player and producer Bob Casale die last week from heart failure. He was 61.
Born in 1952, Casale trained as a radiologist before being recruited by his brother George to form Devo in 1973. Nicknamed Bob 2 – Bob 1 being frontman Mark Mothersbaugh’s lead guitarist brother – Casale was a continuous member of the group, playing on all nine of the band’s albums, up to 2010’s ‘Something For Everybody’. He was also involved in the production of many of their records.
Outside of Devo, Casale also worked on a number of albums by other bands, and worked on music for TV and film in both performer and engineer capacities, including Wes Anderson films ‘Rushmore’ and ‘The Royal Tenebaums, and kids TV show ‘Rugrats’.
Announcing his brother’s death last week, Gerald Casale said: “As an original member of Devo, Bob was there in the trenches with me from the beginning. He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got”.
He is survived by his wife Lisa, their son Alex and daughter Samantha.
