BMI reaches deal to withdraw from Good Time legal battle

Singer Ally Burnett has taken collecting society BMI off her lawsuit over the Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen track ‘Good Time’.
As previously reported, Burnett filed her lawsuit against Jepsen and Owl City in 2012, also naming the co-writers on the song Brian Lee and Matt Thiessen, plus publishers Universal Music, Songs Music Publishing, Schoolboy Records and all the US collecting societies, ASCAP, SESAC and BMI, as defendants. She claimed that Owl City and Jepsen’s song had taken the “unique vocal motif” and hook of her song ‘Ah, It’s A Love Song’, which she released in 2010.
While the litigation rumbles on, a deal has been struck with BMI in which it will set aside $804,156 of royalties stemming from ‘Good Time’ pending the outcome of the legal battle. In return the rights body won’t have to fight the lawsuit itself.
