BMG has got in quick with its first acquisition of the year, having bought a stack of song rights from Spanish media firm PRISA. The deal includes, says BMG, “some of the most notable titles in Spanish pop history”. And yeah, that includes ‘Macarena’, what of it?

BMG boss man Hartwig Masuch said he was “delighted” to be buying PRISA’s Nova and Lirics & Music catalogues. Is this going to be the year of delight? No more thrills? “We are delighted to further build the strength of BMG in Spain”, he told reporters. “Our investment in these classics of Spanish language music is a reflection of our long-term commitment both to the Spanish and Latin American markets and to creating a truly international music company”.

BMG’s MD for Spain and Portugal, Daniela Bosé, added: “This acquisition is a milestone for BMG as it builds its position as one of the most significant music companies in the Spanish language market. In recent years we have reached agreements with many renowned writers such as Pablo Alborán, Miguel Bosé, Macaco and Nacho Cano and are also investing in new and emerging talent. These two historic catalogues will further build our presence in the market”.
