Beyonce has become the latest musician to speak out against North Carolina’s so called ‘bathroom bill’. Rather than boycott the state entirely, as some artists have done, Beyonce published a statement against the anti-transgender law as her tour arrived in the city of Raliegh.

As previously reported, artists including Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam have cancelled shows in North Carolina, over the Public Facilities Privacy And Security Act. Becoming law last month, the act forces transgender people to use public toilets based on the gender they were born into, rather than that with which they now identify.

Other acts, such as Mumford & Sons, Cyndi Lauper and Laura Jane Grace, performed in the state but spoke out against the law, as Beyonce has now done.

“As The Formation World Tour makes its stop in the Tar Heel state in the midst of such a controversial time, we think it is important for us to bring attention to those who are committed to being good and carrying on the message of equality in this core of controversy”, said the singer in a statement.

“Among the many organisations doing the good work to get this bill overturned, there is Equality NC, a local organisation dedicated to securing equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer North Carolinians”.

The singer then encouraged fans to fight the controversial law by “donating, volunteering, becoming an ambassador, attending an event, or simply spreading the word”.
