Single Review: Bell X1 – The Great Defector (BellyUp Records)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 2 March 2009
“Talking Heads-influenced” – these days, a sentence found in music press releases aplenty. But what is it about David Byrne & co that has the nu-new-wave-indie set careening at high speed on the bandwagon down the road of “Been There Already”? By the sounds of things, Bell X1 are simply striving to reach a wider and arguably closer-to-home audience. Having spent the last couple of years wooing America, the Irish quartet have returned with ‘The Great Defector’, a British Sea Power-esque power pop piece complete with chanty, sing-along verses and the barest hint of strings. The lyrics are a bit corny and contrived, but the tune itself is likeable and catchy, a reminder that Bell X1 are what they are – poppy, and mass appealing. Whether that will bring them back home remains to be seen. TW
