BBC 6music to uncover ‘lost’ Bowie show
By Aly Barchi | Published on Wednesday 23 October 2013
A long-lost ‘mock radio show’ hosted by David Bowie, dating back to 1973, will air in five parts via BBC 6music today. Originally made as a promotional tool for Bowie’s covers LP, ‘Pin-Ups’, the programme finds him playing five tracks by other artists (all featuring on the ‘Pin-Ups’ tracklisting – amongst those The Pretty Things’ ‘Rosalyn’, The Yardbirds’ ‘I Wish You Would’ and The Who’s ‘I Can’t Explain’).
Nigel Reeve, guardian of the Bowie archive, who discovered the broadcast, says: “It was in an old tape vault with simply the words ‘Radio Show’ written on it. This is such a rare find. No one knew of its existence, apart from David and Ken [Scott, Bowie’s one-time producer]. To play it for the first time was quite simply a jaw-dropping moment”.
6music Editor James Stirling adds: “As a network showcasing music of alternative spirit, David Bowie is at our core. It’s fantastic that our listeners will have the opportunity to hear this radio show for the first time ever”.
Listen to the show throughout the day via the 6music site.
