The Hearing

In the few weeks since Ringa Manner – aka The Hearing – released her second album ‘Adrian’, it has fast been becoming one of my favourites of the year. Her talent for writing interesting pop songs, with intriguing lyrical twists and unexpected shifts in intonation, prove a winning combination.

Opener ‘Straight Teeth’ sets the tone for the record by juxtaposing apparent calm with quiet anger. Seething lyrics are delivered sweetly, the reigns held tightly on the words “fuck this all, fuck everything” as they threaten to give the game away. Another highlight is previous single ‘Backwards’, on which the unexpected hook is the word “if”. In fact, the song could have 50% more ifs and I wouldn’t mind.

Now comes new single ‘Robot Vs Human Heart’, one of the album’s faster paced tracks, underlayed with cinematic synths and with lyrics that tell a vivid, relatable story that boasts gripping drama and tension.

You’ll be able to catch Manner twice at The Great Escape later this month – she being one of six Finnish acts playing the event this year, alongside LCMDF, K-X-P, View, Have You Ever Seen The Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS and Eliphantree. Right now, listen to ‘Robot Vs Human Heart’ here:
