Approved: Sky Ferreira – Everything Is Embarassing
By Aly Barchi | Published on Monday 3 September 2012
Since our last glimpse of Sky Ferreira – posing as a new-era Shirley Manson (also that track’s co-author) in ‘Red Lips’ – she has up-dialled the angst on her belated debut LP, changing its title from ‘Wild At Heart’ to the much sulkier ‘I’m Not Alright’. Having sourced studio partners from across the alt-pop index, she’s also collaborated with Jon Brion (Fiona Apple), Ariel Rechtshaid (Charli XCX) and Blake Mills (Band Of Horses) on what seems pre-destined to be her very diverse pre-album-release new EP ‘Ghost’.
Unlike ‘Red Lips’, which daubed its all-too-adult message way above the eyeline of Sky’s primarily pre-teen fanbase (I blame Terry Richardson’s ‘inspired’ design for its video), new Blood Orange duet ‘Everything Is Embarrassing’ is a natural fit to Ferreira’s self-aware anti-pop panache. Encircled in a lax, looped chorus that plays like a faint facsimile of 2010’s ‘One’, it’s released with three further LP-tracks-to-be as part of ‘Ghost’ on 2 Oct.
