Sequin, aka Portuguese singer-songwriter Ana Miró, released her debut album, ‘Penelope’, through Lovers & Lollypops earlier this year, though it’s only just found its way to my ears – another great find via the Lights & Music blog.
It’s a beautiful melancholic pop record. A lot more beautiful than the title of its opening track, ‘Meth Monster’, would suggest. The songwriting is sharp throughout, and the production, courtesy of Moullinex, brings out the best in Miró’s voice.
I really hope it’s an album that will continue to pick up more fans, so that maybe I’ll get to see her perform live in the UK sometime. Because, look, this performance of ‘Meth Monster’ in a studio and this performance of ‘Flamingo’ in an alleyway are both great.
Listen to ‘Penelope’ in full on Bandcamp, and have a watch of the video for the track ‘Naïve’ here:
