Approved: Sabiyha
By Andy Malt | Published on Tuesday 13 March 2018
Sabiyha Rasheed may already be familiar to those of you who keep a close eye on the folk scene. As a developing artist she’s already been marked by many as someone with a bright future. On her debut single, ‘Bird’, she shows exactly why. Strong songwriting and an astonishing voice already set her up as more than just another new act.
Referencing her Indo-Caribbean descent, she explains that ‘Bird’ tells a story of being “torn between my heritage and trying to assimilate into a world where I didn’t truly fit in”. She brings in some southern Indian musical influences to act as “a moment to reflect my history, pride and the power I feel being a person of colour”.
The song is taken from Rasheed’s forthcoming debut EP, ‘Hollow Bones’, out later this month. She will play a launch show at The Bedford in Balham on 28 Mar.
