Mariam The Believer

Mariam Wallentin, one half of Wildbirds & Peacedrums, releases her debut solo album, ‘Blood Donation’, through Moshi Moshi on 7 Oct. Ahead of that, the centrepiece of the album, a track called ‘Invisible Giving’, recently appeared on YouTube.

The dark, foreboding sound of the track stretches out for just under eight minutes, its repeating rhythms giving it a trance-like feel as Wallentin’s strong vocal breaks through, instructing the listener to “make a hole”. The simple but effective video sees her doing just that, digging solidly in the dark for the duration.

Discussing the song, the first she wrote for ‘Blood Donations’, she said: “I tried to make several songs out of it but it wasn’t how it wanted to be played, the different parts in the song structure needed each other to make sense of it somehow. The song is also a bit about that, how small parts in life are linked and together make a way leading to something – that we should not neglect the tiny things in life that may not seem important at first”.

Mariam The Believer will be in the UK to play Festival No 6 on 14 Sep, before touring with Junip and playing a headline show at St Pancras Old Church on 9 Oct.
