A young South London MC with a lax, plain-speaking style and easily traceable links to King Krule and Jesse ‘From SE’ James Solomon et al’s prolific but non-showy South London crowd, Loyle Carner off-loaded his five-track first ‘headline’ EP ‘A Little Late’, a nod to the long wait for its release, back in September.
The EP followed profile-raising ‘feat’ spots on singing-songwriting-violin-playing wonderkid Tom Misch’s ‘Karma’ and Irish rapper Rejjie Snow’s ‘1992’, and now, rising off all that, is Carner’s strings-trimmed new track ‘Baby Grey’, created as a Tate-commissioned reaction to the work of Turner Prize-nominated artist Tris Vonna-Michell.
Vonna-Michell makes audio and spoken-word shorts with many-graded “circuitous” narratives and, as I guess is the point of the whole collaboration, ‘Baby Grey’ does the same, lapping backwards and forwards in time, mixing real stories and imagined nostalgia in a way that, like Vonna-Michell’s work, is meant to both inform and to baffle.
