Approved: Kelly Lee Owens
By Andy Malt | Published on Tuesday 3 November 2015
Kelly Lee Owens has released two singles this year – ‘Lucid’ and ‘Uncertain’ – and is currently working on her debut album, which is due for release next summer. But if you think you’ve known her name for longer than that, you probably recognise her from her work on Daniel Avery’s 2013 album ‘Drone Logic’.
Owens’ solo work doesn’t operate in an entirely different field from Avery’s smart techno, but is far more restrained. She takes time to calmly explore the sounds she pulls together, allowing them to bleed nicely with her vocals in a way that feels exciting, fresh and thoroughly considered. Though that doesn’t mean she’s averse to a good old club banger, as her recent rework of Jenny Hval’s ‘Kingsize’ shows.
You have one more chance to catch Owens live in 2015, when she supports Jaakko Eino Kalevi at Electrowerkz in Islington on 18 Nov. And as a bonus, you get to see Jaakko Eino Kalevi too. Don’t miss it.
