Approved: Jocelyn Brown at Jazz Cafe
By Paul Vig | Published on Friday 13 January 2012
US soul vocalist Jocelyn Brown is gracing the stage of the Cafe for two nights this weekend. I’ve been lucky to have witnessed her in action before with Louie Vega, performing hits like ‘Nights Over Egypt’ and Masters At Work’s ‘I Feel It’ and ‘Black Gold Of The Sun’, all met with rapturous applause thanks to a truly awesome performance.
And while you may only be vaguely aware of her oeuvre, once Brown gets on stage you’ll find more of her set familiar than you might expect, partly because of some key samples of her work in pop and hip hop tracks over the years. Still active as a performer, and running her own production company, along with occasional appearances of musical reality shows, all this despite her now being in her 60s, Brown is a definite must see act.
Entry to her shows this weekend also gets you into the Jazz Cafe club night afterwards, which is usually quite lively – its 90s hip hop and R&B on Friday and 80s on Saturday.
Friday 13 / Saturday 14 Jan, Jazz Cafe, Camden, NW5, doors 7pm, £25 adv, more on the door, more info here.
