Club Tip CMU Approved
Approved: Hospital Records at XOYO
By Paul Vig | Published on Friday 20 July 2012
Hospital Records, as part of Tiger Beer’s Hidden Depths series, bring you a back-in-the-day set from Photek, and a bit of an exclusive too, a new take on his classic album ‘Modus Operandi’.
Photek, the “Ginger Ninja”, or Rupert Parkes to his mum, should need very little in the way of an introduction. A pioneering force in the days when jungle was evolving into drum and bass, his excellent programming produced instant classics on labels like Metalheadz, Certificate 18, Basement Records and Bukem’s Good Looking, before finally being signed to EMI/Virgin’s Science imprint. So, a great ouvre, and his more recent dubstep work is still on the money.
In 1997 his fairly experimental ‘Hidden Camera’ EP was followed by the ”Modus Operandi’ album, presenting some downtempo moves and grooves with the jazz tinged title track, the downtempo ‘Hidden Camera’ and the disjointed staccato percussion of ‘KJZ’, alongside some real thumpers like ‘Axiom’ and ‘Smoke Rings’. This is a rare opportunity to see Photek’s modern take on this very fine record.
To back up this old school set, the Hospital crew will be in attendance, so that’s High Contrast, Fred V & Grafix, MC Wrec, Landslide, Swell Session, Other Echoes and label honcho Chris Goss.
Wed 25 July, XOYO, 32-37 Cowper Street, London, EC2A, 9pm-2am, more on door, info at www.xoyo.co.uk
