Creep

Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard had both enjoyed reasonably successful careers in DJing and music-making prior to starting to collaborate together as Creep last year. This in part explains why the dark R&B project has hit the ground running so fast. Their debut single, ‘Days’, released last December by Young Turks, featured vocals from The xx’s Romy Madley Croft and a video directed by Warren Fischer of Fischerspooner (for whom Flax acts as tour DJ).

In terms of their sound, they’re not entirely dissimilar to Ninja Tune’s Emika, though perhaps not quite as inventive production-wise. However, their songs are very effective, lent a hauntingly emotive quality with slow, creeping percussion and sparse synths, build upon by their wise choices of vocalists. New track ‘You’, the video for which went up on Pitchfork yesterday, features identical twin vocalists Nina Sky. And if you’re up at Liverpool Sound City this Saturday, you can catch this all live when they play The Shipping Forecast.
