Cocoa Futures

You know when you hear a song for the first time and the first few seconds make you think, “Oh my god, I am going to love this”. Then the song slips into the first verse and it’s a big let down? Well that’s not what happens with Cocoa Futures’ new single ‘The Blue’. It’s a joy from beginning to end.

Surely, finding that one song that fully connects with you is why we all seek out new music and put ourselves through the disappointment of listening to the songs that don’t. Which sort of chimes with the lyrics of ‘The Blue’, of which frontman Greg Sanderson says: “It’s a good idea to feel sad sometimes, but the things you can do to avoid feeling down can be really, really fun”.

I mean, it’s not exactly what I said back in the first paragraph, but it’s close enough, I’d say. The track’s beautiful circling bass line and descending guitar riff should distract you from analysing the incongruity in the construction of this edition of CMU Approved.

The track is taken from a new EP that isn’t even out until 2 Dec. If you want to hear more, there are some opportunities to see the band live. First, at Ryan’s Bar in Stoke Newington on 16 Sep, then at the Blogtober festival at The Finsbury in Manor House on 7 Oct, and there’s an EP launch show at the Sebright Arms in Hackney on 3 Dec.
