Given their name, it would be fair to expect that Canadian sextet Brasstronaut might make bad ska punk, but I promise you they don’t. The band was initially formed as a duo, with keyboard player Edo Van Breeman and trumpet player Bryan Davies making ambient instrumental electronica with jazz trumpet. That idea may have you wishing for the time when you thought they were a ska punk band, but these days they’re making something far more palatable.
With Van Breeman adding some vocals and the band’s line-up expanding, they developed a sound that continues to draw on the classical training of Davies and other band members, but throws it all into pop structures. The result is a sound that’s smart and often complex but also completely accessible and very likeable. The band release their debut album, ‘Mount Chimaera’, on 8 Nov and are on tour in the UK now, including a show at The Underbelly in London tonight and at In The City on Wednesday.
