Approved: Blonde Redhead remixes

Blonde Redhead

Blonde Redhead’s ‘Penny Sparkle’ was one of my favourite albums of last year. A collection of beautiful, dreamlike songs topped off with Kazu Makino’s mind-swallowing voice, carefully assembled into perfect forms. So what better to do nine months later than let some people fuck with them? To celebrate their upcoming European tour, the band have released a free six track remix EP.

The album’s opening track, ‘Here Sometimes’, is attacked from three different angles by Gayngs, Pantha Du Prince and Becoming Real. It’s the latter who really runs away with the track, leaving little trace of the original, save for short one second bursts of synth and heavily cut up vocals. Salem take a similar, if not quite as drastic, approach to album title track ‘Penny Sparkle’, softening all sounds down to ethereal mush before adding needling hi hat.

The tour that all this is promoting doesn’t actually make it to the UK until September, but bear in mind you can catch the band at Manchester’s Academy venue on 5 Sep, and then at Union Chapel in London on 6 Sep, which will be amazing.
