Approved: Bernice – New Bodies
By Aly Barchi | Published on Wednesday 7 March 2012
Not (despite what Google may say) an instructional home gym site, but rather a musical project based on the musings of singer-songwriter Robin Dann, Toronto-based Bernice released debut album ‘What Was That’ in low-key style last September.
With said LP still available to preview and/or purchase by way of the band’s Bandcamp page, standout second track ‘New Bodies’ was featured on last week’s instalment of Jon Hillcock’s New Noise podcast, and is also free to download as part of The Line Of Best Fit’s very fine ‘Oh! Canada’ compilation.
A still-small sonnet borne along on a beautiful, madrigal melancholy, it sounds akin to Odd Future faction The Internet’s jazz-adjacent R&B softcore, albeit a mild-mannered cousin as opposed to close relation. You can stream ‘New Bodies’ through the above links, or alternatively see it played live amidst some garden greenery in this faultless little Take Away video:
