Bastard Mountain

Back in 2009, members of King Creosote, Animal Magic Tricks and Meursault got together to record what became an album called ‘Cold Seeds’, released through Song, By Toad. The simple concept, albeit a concept that formed during the process of recording, was that each vocalist wrote some songs for the others to sing.

Three years later, in 2012, the project was reprised by Song, By Toad with a (mostly) different cast of players – solo artist Rob St John, Sparrow & The Workshop’s Jill O’Sullivan, Pete Harvey and Neil Pennycook from Meursault, Rory Sutherland from Broken Records, and Reuben Taylor from James Yorkston And The Athletes. St John, O’Sullivan and Pennycook each arrived with a couple of songs for the others to sing, and from there, Bastard Mountain was born.

Recorded over the course of a week, the band’s album, ‘Farewell, Bastard Mountain’, finally sees the light of day on 12 May. Which is good news, because it’s a great record, ten atmospheric, layered folk songs, perfectly balancing the musical styles of each of the group’s temporary members.

Following the album release, they’ll keep it going a bit longer with a couple of live shows. They’ll play the Shhh! Festival in London on 24 May and then a headline date at Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh on 29 May.
