Approved: Asbjørn
By Andy Malt | Published on Thursday 19 January 2012
Asbjørn Toftdahl first appeared in the Approved column last summer when he was going by the name of Asbjørn And The Strange Ears. Back then he had just released his debut single, ‘Strange Ears’, which was one of my favourite tracks of 2011.
Having spent the rest of the year working on his debut album, ‘Sunken Ships’, with producer Jonas Tranberg (who also worked on Efterklang’s ‘Magic Chairs’ album), Toftdahl returned this week with a streamlined moniker and a brand new single, ‘The Criminal’.
Driven by cracks of snare and stabs of piano, ‘The Criminal’ pours just the right amount of darkness and drama onto an otherwise pure pop track, giving it a similar tone to Niki And The Dove’s ‘DJ, Ease My Mind’ – the first of their tracks to draw me in – though perhaps with slightly less melodrama. You can watch the video for the full track below, or head over to SoundCloud or Facebook to download the radio edit of the track for free. The album, meanwhile, is due for release via Toftdahl’s own Body Of Work label in Denmark this April.
